Prosthodontic Dentistry (or Prosthetic Dentistry) treats missing teeth or treats existing teeth that have significant damage. Restorations are used to replace or restore missing teeth or missing parts of the tooth structure.
Benefits of Prosthetics
The benefits of fixing missing teeth include:
- Prevents existing teeth from drifting into surrounding space of the missing teeth
- Teeth out of position can damage tissues in the mouth
- The difficulty of thorough cleaning between crooked teeth runs the risk of tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease that can lead to the loss of additional teeth.
- Improves out your smile
- Helps to properly chew food
- May improve speech
- Prevent a sagging face by providing support for lips and cheeks
Dentures
A denture replaces missing teeth and adjacent tissues. Unlike dental implants, a denture is removable. There are two main types of dentures (i) complete dentures and partial dentures
Benefits of Dentures
- Prevents existing teeth from drifting into surrounding space of the missing teeth
- Teeth out of position can damage tissues in the mouth
- Helps to chew food
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures or Full dentures are used when all the teeth are missing. Complete dentures can be either "conventional" or "immediate". The framework of complete dentures may be made of resin, metal or a combination of the two. Conventional Dentures and Immediate Dentures Conventional Dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal. Conventional dentures is ready for placement in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.
Immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal therefore, immediate dentures would usually require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made. The healing process may comprise several months for your bone and tissue to stabilize after tooth extractions.
Implant supported over-dentures are an alternate to conventional dentures whereby a full set of dentures are placed over the dental implants with metal bar/balls that gives better retention.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.
A removable partial denture usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is connected by metal clasps or precision attachments that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Precision attachments are generally more esthetic than metal clasps and they are nearly invisible.

Mr Greig MarkhamGood Morning, Ms Dipa, Greetings from Bangalore. It's hard to believe we were in Hythe on Wednesday and now we are here and the treatment has started. The flights were excellent and we were collected from the airport as arranged. We were delighted to meet the happy, smiling, helpful Ms Kusha and our registration was handled very efficiently. My treatment plan was reviewed and confirmed, the team was introduced ("Many people will have their hands in your mouth during the next three weeks") and they inspired confidence. The Hospital is all that anyone could wish for - Friday was a marathon session with 5 Root Canals and 2 & 1/2 hours drilling, and yesterday (Saturday) all they wanted was to see if I am OK, now we have a holiday until Wednesday morning. We both think we could not have had such good care and treatment anywhere; there is still a lot to do but it feels good so far. The 'Service' Apartment is fine; now we know what it means - our own room en suite with a living room and kitchen shared with two other Apartments, and 4 house boys to cook, wash, clean, etc. for which we pay Rs. 2,400 nightly including tax; and we can recommend it. It takes about half an hour to get to the hospital in the rush-hour by rickshaw, less on Saturday, for Rs. 35. We are conveniently located for exploring the City, shopping and restaurants. I hope these few notes may help you and anyone else thinking of coming here for treatment. best wishes. Mr Chris Sorrell
Dear Dipa,
Ref. Patient Feedback.
With regards to my treatment at The Manipal Hospital in Oct. 2005.
I was met at the Airport by staff and taken to the hospital were I had to wait for some time befor being asked to register. I was then taken up to the sixth floor were I was given a room. It was not of a standard I had expected and I complainded to the staff. I spent the first night here, but because of my complaint, was moved up to the eighth floor to an executive room the next day. Couldn's have wished for a better room, it was first class!!
The staffs were extermely helpful, and very professional at all times. In particular Kusha Srinivas (releations executive) from The International Care Cell gave me every assistance, which made my stay very easy indeed.
The consultand dental surgeons, Dr. M. A. Baliga, took a great deal of trouble looking after me and making me aware of the procedures as they came up. I am returning on April 19th to have the teeth fitted to the implants. My stay this time is, as suggested by Dr. Baliga, for three weeks (two for the dental work, and one to make sure it is perfect.) I shall be staying in a serviced apartment, which the hospital will arrange, on my arrival.
My thanks to you and your staff for all your help.
Warm Regards, Chris Sorrell
