Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. These includes treatment of different conditions:
- Over-Crowding
- Deep overbite
- Open bite
- Overjet or upper protuding teeth
- Underbite or lower protuding jaw
- Crossbite
- Spaces in between teeth
Orthodontists requires professional skill in the design, application and control of corrective appliances, such as braces and retainers to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and to achieve facial balance. The results of orthodontic treatment can be dramatic - beautiful smiles, improved dental health and an enhanced quality of life for many people of all ages. Outstanding results are dependent on maximizing the coordination of care between you and our centres in India. Types of Orthodontic Treatments
- Conventional Metal Braces
Conventional metal braces are now smaller, more efficient and comfortable In recent years following many advances in orthodontic materials such as metal wires and brackets. The wires now being used are no longer just stainless steel. They are made of alloys of nickel, titanium, copper and cobalt and some of the wires are heat-activated. These new kinds of wires cause the teeth to continue to move during certain phases of treatment. In addition, braces on the front teeth typically have only the bracket bonded directly to the tooth, minimizing the "tin grin". These "space age" materials advancements exert a steady, gentle pressure on the teeth so that the tooth-moving process may be faster and more comfortable for patients.
- Clear braces
The metal brackets on braces can now be done clear or coloured, depending on the patient's preference. Clear braces makes wearing braces less noticeable.
- Lingual Braces or Internal Braces
An invisible method of wearing braces. Lingual Braces or Internal Braces are attached to the inside or lingual side of the teeth to allow tooth movements to be carried out while making them completely non-visible. Lingual orthodontics is particularly well-suited for adults whose professions keep them in the public eye. No one can tell they are wearing these braces. Patients can enjoy the process of orthodontia while still retaining a natural smile.
Braces are made up of two main components: the small metal pieces (known as brackets) attached directly to the teeth, and the wire which connects them together (known as the arch wire). With standard braces, the brackets are cemented to the front of the teeth, which are quite uniform in their shape. However, lingual brackets are attached to the back side of the teeth.
The back side of each tooth has its own unique shape-unlike the front of each tooth. Each lingual bracket must be custom-formed to the unique shape of each individual tooth. Treatment for lingual braces are usually more difficult than that of standard braces, thus only orthodontists trained in lingual technique are able to offer this form of specialized treatment. Benefits of Lingual BracesCase of Lingual Braces
- Hidden thus not visible that braces are being worn
- Bite opening and better anchorage control
- Less speech hindrance
Although the treatment is more difficult there are lots of techniques being used now which are allowing the lingual orthodontist to treat patients to the same standard as if labial appliances were being used. Invisalign Invisalign uses a series of clear removable custom made aligners to straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets. This is an invisible way to straighten your teeth without braces. The course of treatment involves changing aligners to moving your teeth into straighter position step by step until you have a more beautiful smile. And unlike braces, these clear aligners can be removed while you eat and brush your teeth as usual. Benefits of Invisalign
- Invisible thus no unwarranted attention to your mouth
- Removable thus easy to eat, brush and floss
- No brackets to catch food or plaque
Healthier gums from properly aligned teeth that help gums to "fit" tighter around each tooth Easier cleanings in maintaining a good oral hygiene program that reduce chances of plaque buildup, tooth decay and periodontal disease RetainersA retainer is a custom-made, removable appliance that help teeth to maintain their new position after braces have been removed. Retainers can also be used to treat minor orthodontic problems |

Mr Greig MarkhamGood Morning, Ms Dipa, Greetings from Bangalore. It's hard to believe we were in Hythe on Wednesday and now we are here and the treatment has started. The flights were excellent and we were collected from the airport as arranged. We were delighted to meet the happy, smiling, helpful Ms Kusha and our registration was handled very efficiently. My treatment plan was reviewed and confirmed, the team was introduced ("Many people will have their hands in your mouth during the next three weeks") and they inspired confidence. The Hospital is all that anyone could wish for - Friday was a marathon session with 5 Root Canals and 2 & 1/2 hours drilling, and yesterday (Saturday) all they wanted was to see if I am OK, now we have a holiday until Wednesday morning. We both think we could not have had such good care and treatment anywhere; there is still a lot to do but it feels good so far. The 'Service' Apartment is fine; now we know what it means - our own room en suite with a living room and kitchen shared with two other Apartments, and 4 house boys to cook, wash, clean, etc. for which we pay Rs. 2,400 nightly including tax; and we can recommend it. It takes about half an hour to get to the hospital in the rush-hour by rickshaw, less on Saturday, for Rs. 35. We are conveniently located for exploring the City, shopping and restaurants. I hope these few notes may help you and anyone else thinking of coming here for treatment. best wishes. Mr Chris Sorrell
Dear Dipa,
Ref. Patient Feedback.
With regards to my treatment at The Manipal Hospital in Oct. 2005.
I was met at the Airport by staff and taken to the hospital were I had to wait for some time befor being asked to register. I was then taken up to the sixth floor were I was given a room. It was not of a standard I had expected and I complainded to the staff. I spent the first night here, but because of my complaint, was moved up to the eighth floor to an executive room the next day. Couldn's have wished for a better room, it was first class!!
The staffs were extermely helpful, and very professional at all times. In particular Kusha Srinivas (releations executive) from The International Care Cell gave me every assistance, which made my stay very easy indeed.
The consultand dental surgeons, Dr. M. A. Baliga, took a great deal of trouble looking after me and making me aware of the procedures as they came up. I am returning on April 19th to have the teeth fitted to the implants. My stay this time is, as suggested by Dr. Baliga, for three weeks (two for the dental work, and one to make sure it is perfect.) I shall be staying in a serviced apartment, which the hospital will arrange, on my arrival.
My thanks to you and your staff for all your help.
Warm Regards, Chris Sorrell
